UJ Athletes Excel at SASAPD National Championships in Bloemfontein
Fourteen University of Johannesburg (UJ) students and club members won big during the 2024 SASAPD national championships in Bloemfontein on 22-25 March 2024. The University’s athletes showcased impressive performances, winning 28 medals (14 gold, 8 silver and 6 bronze).
The team, accompanied by one guide runner, two drivers, two coaches, and one manager, also set new national and continental records in their respective categories. UJ athletes not only dominated the medal tally but also shattered records. Yane van der Merwe stole the show with a new African record in discus throw (33.3m) and a South African record in shotput (8.79m). Collin-Lee Harty wasn’t far behind, setting a new national record in the 100m sprints (11.54 seconds). Further adding to the list of impressive feats were Newton Hlongwane’s javelin throw record (27.46m) and Kim Macdonald’s long jump record (3.15m).
“This impressive medal tally reflects the consistent excellence and competitive edge maintained by the SSD athletes throughout the championships. The exceptional results achieved by the SSD athletes underscore the effectiveness of the club’s approach to training and development.
