UJ Makes Global Strides in University Ranking by Academic Excellence (URAP)

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has once again been recognised for academic excellence, securing a position in the Top 5 universities in South Africa. The University Ranking by Academic Excellence (URAP), which is based on academic performance indicators reflecting the quality and the quantity of scholarly publications, has now ranked UJ among the Top 500 universities worldwide in the 2023-2024 period.

According to the latest rankings, UJ is now ranked at an impressive 467th place, up from the previous 537 position. As many as 3000 Higher Education Institutes (HEI) worldwide were evaluated worldwide for the 2023-2024 period.

URAP ranking system and academic quality

The URAP ranking system is renowned for its comprehensive data evaluation of academic performance. The URAP World Ranking is based on 6 academic performance indicators, which are articles published, citation (research impact), total document (scientific productivity), article impact, citation impact and international collaboration.  UJ’s achievement in attaining the top 500 ranking reflects its dedication to providing a world-class academic programme and contributing to the advancement of knowledge on a global scale.

UJ’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Letlhokwa George Mpedi, said this recognition is testament to commitment of the University’s staff and students towards academic excellence. “These latest rankings reaffirm the robustness of our academic programmes and the quality of our teaching and learning and research.” He added that rankings are a demonstration of the impact of South African universities on the global stage. Twenty-two  out of 26 local universities have secured the top 500 in the URAP rankings.
