UltraTech Cement empowers girls in Ariyalur district to pursue their education.
Trichy : Reddipalayam Cement Works, an integrated cement manufacturing unit of UltraTech Cement, located in Ariyalur district of Tamil Nadu has enabled 50 girls from marginalised and rural background to continue their education and reduce school dropout rates.
The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) team of Reddipalayam Cement Works unit recognised the importance of enhancing the living and learning environments at the Central – funded residential school, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, located in Ariyalur block of Ariyalur district of Tamil Nadu in the proximity of the unit. One of the main problems the girls faced was the lack of appropriate infrastructure in the classroom as well as proper residential facilities. The unit team provided foldable, portable, and detachable study tables as well as lightweight school bags to the girls. The tables could be adjusted at two heights and allowed the girls to sit upright while studying, as well as write comfortably. The unit team also constructed two concrete water tanks, a platform, and a shed at the ground level to improve their residential facilities, so that the girls could easily wash and dry their clothes. The students were earlier drying their clothes in the classrooms.
With this initiative the expected outcome i,e, performance of the students improves substantially because of availability of better academic and infrastructure facilities. Completion of their studies will contribute significantly to enhancing livelihood opportunities for the girls after their education making them financial independent.
