UNESCO Launches Tsunami Ready Communication Tools at the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction

The 7th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) was held in Bali 25-28 May 2022. Governments, the UN system, and various stakeholders got together to discuss the latest  developments in disaster risk reduction, and review progress on the implementation of the Sendai Framework 2015-2030, ratified by 187 countries, to build resilient communities and nations.

On 27 May 2022, at Indonesia’s House of Resilience, UNESCO-IOC and the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) launched two Tsunami Ready communication tools, the Tsunami Ready Board Game and the 14 Animation Videos of Tsunami Ready Community. These two tools were developed by the UNESCO-IOC Indian Ocean Tsunami Information Centre (IOTIC) and BMKG, in partnership with the Youth and Young Professionals in Indonesia: Predikt, Box Breaker, and U-INSPIRE Indonesia.

The tools were also displayed at the GPDRR Innovation Platform booth, where guests had a chance to experience the 14 Animation Videos of Tsunami Ready Community through Virtual Reality. They also played and received the Tsunami Ready Board Game at the playing sessions organized by IOTIC and BMKG. The guests could also explore the Tsunami Ready Viewer, an interactive website with information of more than 30 communities recognized by UNESCO-IOC as tsunami ready communities.

Mr Mohamed Djelid, Director of UNESCO Office Jakarta, handed the Tsunami Ready Board Game to Ms. Amina J. Mohammed, UN Deputy Secretary-General and Ms. Mami Mizutori, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for DRR and Head of UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) at the GPDRR.

UNESCO-IOC also inaugurated the First tsunami Ready community in Indonesia.

Following the 7th Session of the GPDRR, Indonesia is planning to mainstream the Bali Agenda for Resilience at the G20 meeting this year, and ASEAN Summit in 2023.
