University of New South Wales (UNSW) has climbed four places to rank 45th in the world

New Delhi: University of New South Wales (UNSW) has climbed four places to rank 45th in the world, further boosting the credibility of the varsity that already has several Indian students at its campus. Given recent global developments, Australia is well on its way to emerge as the preferred destination for Indian students seeking quality foreign education.
Academic excellence and an enviable international outlook have helped UNSW scale up its position in the world and become the highest-ranked university in Sydney and in NSW. Since 2014, UNSW has moved up seven places in the QS Quacquarelli Symonds rankings.
The University scored a maximum 100/100 on the QS International Faculty Index, based on its proportion of international faculty members. QS also gave UNSW high marks for its proportion of international students (97.8/100) and academic reputation (96.4/100), which is judged from a survey of academics around the world. UNSW’s best performing area was employer reputation, where it ranked 26 globally. Employer reputation was judged from an annual survey of employers around the world, which asked for their views on which institutions provide the best professionals.
India continues to be the second-largest source country for international student enrolments in Australia. During the years 2013-2016, the number of Indian students coming to Australia to study grew exponentially and the trend is expected to continue.
Speaking about the varsity’s achievement, Professor Ian Jacobs, UNSW President and Vice-Chancellor, said: “The good news for UNSW in the QS rankings builds on the outstanding work of the UNSW community over many decades and suggests that our 2025 Strategy is taking us in the right direction.
Professor Jacobs had unveiled The Diya Initiative during his visit to India in November last year, through which UNSW would impact 1 lakh students in India by 2025 through the medium of higher education using online and blended learning and classroom teaching to deliver degrees on an unprecedented scale. The university is teaming up with Indian institutions of academic excellence to offer short-term programmes that directly respond to India’s needs and in consonance with a series of flagship government programmes, such as, Swaach Bharat, Digital India, Smart Cities Initiative and others. As part of its India Strategy, UNSW has introduced, for the first time, a series of scholarships earmarked for Indian students.
In April, when Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was on his maiden visit to India, education was high on the agenda as an integral component in the bilateral relationship. With UNSW’s rich history of innovation and its cutting edge research capabilities, the varsity offers

a unique environment to India’s brightest and best, especially in fields like engineering, IT, science, business, built environment, law, art and design, and humanities.
Ms Fiona Docherty, Vice-President International, Marketing and Communications, drew attention to the high regard for UNSW education in the minds of employers worldwide and the recognition of UNSW’s global outlook. “We already know that UNSW graduates are highly employable, both in the competitive jobs market here in Sydney and nationally and abroad, and the QS employer survey confirms this. UNSW is a university of choice not only for students, but for staff as well. The rankings reveal the early success of our intensive global academic recruitment efforts, and our growing reputation for academic excellence.” Ms Docherty said. For Indian students, UNSW offers an exceptional experience to impact their future.
