University of Alberta: U of A rises in aggregate ranking of the world’s top academic institutions
The University of Alberta is ranked 113th among the world’s top universities, according to an aggregate ranking that combines results from five respected global rankings.
The U of A’s standing in the Rankometer 2022 World University Rankings is a 12-place jump from last year, when it came in at 125th in Rankometer’s inaugural ranking. The U of A also held steady at fifth in Canada.
Only the top 500 institutions in the world receive a Rankometer ranking.
“This latest ranking, a compilation of several global university ratings, affirms the U of A is among the world’s best,” says U of A president Bill Flanagan. “I am proud of our entire community; whether it’s seeking a cure for diabetes, discovering green solutions or finding ways to make the world more just, we are making a difference.”
Rankometer rankings are a composite of five prominent university rankings: the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, the QS World University Rankings, the CWTS Leiden Ranking, the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) and the Ranking Web of Universities Webometrics. These five rankings were all established more than 15 years ago, providing years’ worth of data on academic institutions around the world.
Success in these new aggregate rankings continues a trend of strong showings in a variety of international rankings. The U of A ranked 110th globally in the 2023 QS World University Rankings, which are included in the Rankometer aggregate ranking. It also had its best-ever performance in the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) World University Rankings 2022-23, coming in at 77th in the world.
In addition to the overall academic rankings, the U of A excelled in several subject-specific rankings this year. The latest QS World University Rankings by Subject named the U of A the best in Canada for nursing and petroleum engineering. In all, 15 U of A subjects ranked in the top 100 internationally, including mining and mineral engineering (12th), sports-related subjects (16th) and anatomy and physiology (21st).
In the 2022 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, the U of A ranked 11th in the world for environmental science and engineering, and placed among the world’s top 50 in several other subjects including biological sciences (30th), business administration (30th), mining and mineral engineering (31st), agricultural sciences (42nd), instruments science and technology (48th), and nursing (49th).
The U of A was also named one of the world’s top 15 most sustainable post-secondary institutions in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, which recognize universities’ efforts toward achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals for 2030.
The Rankometer ranking was launched in 2021 by AppliedHE Pte Ltd., a Singapore-based organization that serves the graduate recruitment and higher education sectors.
