University of Amsterdam: UvA again number one Dutch university in QS World University Rankings

The University of Amsterdam is ranked 58th in the world in the 2023 QS Rankings. Like last year, the UvA is the highest ranked Dutch university on the list. The UvA has dropped three spots on the list since last year, when the UvA was number 55. In this latest ranking, which was published on 8 June, the UvA is in the top 4% of the ranked universities.


In total, QS evaluated 2,462 institutions from around 100 countries, of which 1,422 are included in the ranking. The QS World University Rankings are compiled based on six criteria: academic reputation (40%), employer reputation (10%), citations per faculty (20%), student to faculty ration (20%), international faculty (5%) and international students (5%). The UvA scores most highly in citations per faculty.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is the top-ranking university, holding this spot for the 11th year in a row. In places two and three are the University of Oxford and Stanford University, respectively. The Netherlands is well represented in the rankings, with a total of seven Dutch universities in the top 200. Alongside the University of Amsterdam, TU Delft is also ranked in the top 100, placing at number 61.
