University of Auckland: Shaping a Fit-for-Purpose Healthcare Workforce for New Zealand
The first of a series of panel conversations discussing topics crucial to Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland and Aotearoa New Zealand explores what must be done to future proof our health workforce.
Former Director-General Health, Sir Ashley Bloomfield is moderating the first of the Taumata Rau Conversations series. These panel discussions, hosted by the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, are designed to delve in to some of the big issues facing society today that will have a significant impact on upcoming generations.
The future health system in Aotearoa New Zealand will depend on a well-trained and fully staffed health workforce able to adapt to rapid changes in health science tools and techniques, including AI and genomics.
Current training and staffing shortfalls challenging the health workforce here are not unique to NZ, which is are competing in a global market for healthcare professionals. The questions is what do we needs to do now to ensure we have the health professionals thatnecessary to keep providing excellent care in future.
Keynote speaker, Dr Lloyd McCann is CEO of Tamaki Health. A graduate of the University of Auckland’s Medical School, he advocates for a better healthcare system for all New Zealanders that prioritises equity, value-based care, and better use of digital technologies.
