University Of Birmingham Associate Professor Gets Summer Research Fellowship
Dr Hilary Brown, Associate Professor in Translation Studies and expert in transnational cultural history in the early modern period, is spending a month at the Herzog August Bibliothek (HAB) Wolfenbüttel in Lower Saxony, Germany. She has been awarded a research fellowship from the HAB for a new project on early Anglo-German cultural relations.
The significance of Anglo-German relations from the eighteenth century onwards, when the Hanoverian dynasty began their rule in Great Britain, is well documented. Dr Brown will be investigating the much less well known links between England and Germany in the ‘long’ seventeenth century (c.1580-1680). She will explore this web of cultural interactions within religious, political and economic developments, drawing particular attention to the agents who have often been invisible in the historiography such as queens consort. The project will thus shed new light on the rich and complex history of two nations now increasingly divided by Brexit.
