University of Birmingham doctoral scholar bags prize at Numerical Analysis conference

Held at the University of Strathclyde on June 27-30, the Biennial Numerical Analysis Conference is a major event for the international numerical analysis community. The first conference dating back to mid-1960s, active numerical analysis groups in the UK are usually well represented at these meetings. Many UK-based numerical analysts gave their first talk at this conference series as PhD students.

At this conference just three awards were given for the best student presentations. Alongside Jeremias Arf of RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau and Philipp Zilk of Universität der Bundeswehr München, Thomas Round won a prize for his presentation “Goal-oriented adaptivity for stochastic collocation finite element methods”. The prizes are sponsored by the UK and Ireland section of SIAM.

Thomas’s PhD research concerns the design, analysis and implementation of effective adaptive algorithms for solving parameter-dependent partial differential equations, that are widely used to quantify uncertainty in physical systems and engineering applications.
