University of California Irvine: Physiology & biophysics professor co-writes book on how membranes, their proteins work
Stephen H. White, a professor of physiology & biophysics in the UCI School of Medicine since 1973, has co-authored a book that he calls the culmination of his career. Cell Boundaries (Garland Science, 2021) was 13 years in the making and describes how membranes and their proteins work. White and his collaborators, Gunnar von Heijne, professor of biochemistry and biophysics at Stockholm University, and Donald M. Engelman, Eugene Higgins Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University, wrote the book to expand advanced bioscience students’ knowledge about the basic physics and physical chemistry of membranes. They also share the history behind some of the critical early breakthroughs, highlighting adventures and missteps in the process of making those discoveries.
