University of Canterbury (UC) marked the achievements of 90 academic and professional staff at Hui Whakamānawa

Each year, accomplished professionals and academics gather for an afternoon of collective recognition, celebrating achievements ranging from academic promotions to embodying Ngā Uara | Our Values.

Following a welcome speech by Tumu Whakarae | Vice-Chancellor Professor Cheryl de la Rey, excellence in Teaching and Education was honoured. “These remarkable educators have nurtured a culture of innovation, curiosity, and inclusivity within our academic community. Their passion for teaching and their ability to inspire students is invaluable,” Tumu Tuarua Akoranga | Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic Professor Catherine Moran said.

Sustainability is a crucial part of UC’s Strategic Vision 2020-2030, Tangata Tū, Tangata Ora. Those impacting research, teaching and learning and operating practices in sustainability were recognised for their mahi.

Academics engaged in groundbreaking research tackling local and global challenges were celebrated, spanning cutting-edge scientific discoveries to essential climate change work. Notably, 14 academics were applauded as they will take on their new professorial roles in 2024.

Kaihautū Matua Pūmanawa Tangata | Executive Director of People, Culture and Campus Life, Paul O’Flaherty took the stage to honour 13 academic and professional staff who have been employed by the University for 30 years and more.

Acknowledging their three decades of dedication, O’Flaherty expressed gratitude for their unwavering commitment and invaluable contributions to making UC an outstanding and inclusive environment.

The event also turned its spotlight on health, safety, and wellbeing, and capability development, emphasising the holistic approach UC takes in fostering a supportive and healthy work environment that enables staff to thrive and grow.

O’Flaherty also congratulated this year’s Ngā Uara | Values Award winners – people who have gone above and beyond, and truly exemplified UC’s values.

“Today’s event just illustrates the diversity and capability of our university community. Congratulations to all the winners and thank you for all your hard work for our UC community,” O’Flaherty said.
