University of Cape Town: Celebrating Heritage Month the International Office way
The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) International Office celebrated Heritage Month with soccer tournaments, food and music.
On Saturday, 1 October, The International Academic Programmes Office (IAPO) invited all international students to partake in 12 six-aside soccer matches. The teams consisted of student soccer players from all over the globe. The aim of the event was to celebrate various cultures through the love of sports and music, and to build camaraderie among international students and for them to get a taste of what life on campus feels like after the COVID-19 national lockdown.
The day was jam-packed and started off by gathering all the teams together and setting up the matches. Scores were kept by student volunteer referees. At lunch time all teams and student spectators received braai packs, followed by an African-style drumming session and lesson from the Drum Cafe.

International students were also given the opportunity to showcase their entrepreneurial spirits and sell handmade items like jewellery, bath salts and African merchandise at the event. UCT Radio Station joined in on the fun, with DJs playing various tracks and genres of music from all over the world in celebration of cultural diversity.
At the end of a fun filled day, one team, Tiki Taka, took home the gold with first-place edible chocolate medals, a trophy and a cash prize.
