University of Cape Town’s “Career Guide” Bags Four Awards
The University of Cape Town (UCT)’s Career Guide has been crowned Corporate Publication of the Year for 2022 by the South African Publication Forum (SAPF). In addition to this prestigious award, the UCT Careers Service’s flagship publication also brought home awards for Excellence in Communication, Best One-off Publication and was runner-up for the Best Cover award.
In this annual competition, various South African corporate publications are scrutinised by a panel of independent moderators. Runners-up for the Publication of the Year award are publications from the likes of Capitec, Mediclinic, Sanlam and Nando’s.
An important tool
According to the SAPF, the judges and moderators were blown away by UCT’s Career Guide. They write, “This is an absolutely invaluable publication. It’s bulging with incredibly useful and inspiring information and advice. This is something every tertiary institution should provide.”
For the UCT Careers Service, this guide is an important tool to assist students and graduates in their career journeys.
“Employer content is vital to the success and popularity of the publication and we are truly grateful for their involvement.”
“Our aim is to prepare UCT students and provide them with the resources that set them apart,” said Hishamodien Hoosain, the project manager for the publication. “The Career Guide is produced annually so that it has relevant content and industry insights, regardless of a student’s year of study or faculty.
“I strongly believe that employer content is vital to the success and popularity of the publication and we are truly grateful for their involvement. The Career Guide is our ultimate 3P strategy: prepare students, promote job opportunities and help students pivot into their careers successfully.”
A hub for career advice
This publication offers crucial information and advice to students in planning and developing their careers. It not only offers exclusive job opportunities, but also includes pages upon pages of content empowering readers with career advice, the latest news from various industries and articles written by established professionals.
Topics in the 2022 guide include an interdisciplinary approach to job and studies, new emerging career paths, interesting research groups and essential skills needed to navigate the new normal.
The content editor for the guide, Karin van Laeren, said that the theme for this issue was “Navigating a changing world”.
“The idea was to encourage students to embrace the resilience they have learnt during the cruellest times of the pandemic. The average reader has had to pivot from classroom learning to doing everything online and often on their own. This undoubtedly built resilience in these students, a skill they can now leverage in their careers,” Van Laeren said.
