University of East London Welcomes Launch of Midwifery Student Society
A new society for University of East London (UEL) students taking midwifery courses has been launched, with the aim of supporting those studying the discipline.
Dr Heather Bower, Head of Education at the Royal College of Midwives, launched the society in the student union of UEL’s Stratford campus on 5 May, celebrated globally as the International Day of the Midwife.
It was also attended by Robert Waterson, Dean of UEL’s School of Health, Sport and Bioscience, and Teresa Mcmahon, the University’s Head of Department for Nursing and Midwifery.
Two local charities who support new parents in east London, Newham Nurture and the National Childbirth Trust’s Parents in Mind Dads, were also present. The new society will help support members of both organisations as they learn to cope with becoming parents.
The new society’s president Ayisha Adam said,
The society will foster a supportive environment, bringing students together across the three years of the degree programme. A space will be created where we can collaborate with students from other health-related programmes, to help enhance learning through sources of connection and building friendships.
“We plan to host social events, workshops, invite guest speakers, share experiences and networking opportunities in both the university and professional settings.”
There are 20 midwifery students on the University’s BSc Midwifery and Midwifery apprenticeship courses, which are in their first year. Successful completion of the programme will equip students to work as registered midwives in various settings and roles including hospitals, community services, universities and research roles.
