University of Edinburgh: Sustainability award win for University

The University’s efforts to fight the climate crisis have been recognised with an international award.

The International Sustainable Campus Network named the University the winner of its ‘whole systems approach’ award.

The prize recognises work to reduce carbon emissions and embed sustainability into research, teaching and governance, operations, and partnerships.

It comes just weeks after the University was ranked 29th in the world for its contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Positive progress
The University continued to make a positive impact during the past two years, despite the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Its actions included presenting climate science research at COP26 to influence stronger policies worldwide, publishing online courses, and providing free educational resources for children to increase climate awareness in society.

The University remains on track to become net zero carbon by 2040, and recently implemented a Sustainable Travel Policy to prioritise low carbon methods of travel, such as taking the train to London rather than flying.

Crucial role
In a video address to members of the International Sustainable Campus Network, University Principal Professor Peter Mathieson highlighted the fundamental role universities play by shaping society to become more environmentally restorative and socially just.

International efforts
The International Sustainable Campus Network is a body of over 90 universities from more than 30 countries, including the University of Edinburgh, who exchange knowledge and expertise on how to make universities more sustainable.

On behalf of the International Sustainable Campus Network, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to the 2022 ISCN Awards Winners. Our annual awards event represents an excellent opportunity for our members to showcase the important work they are doing to advance sustainability and climate action on their campuses, in teaching, learning, and research, and in the communities in which they serve.
