University Of Glasgow celebrates its experts recognised in the 2023 King’s Birthday Honours

The University of Glasgow is delighted that colleagues and alumni have been recognised for their world changing research and work in the 2023 King’s Birthday Honours.

His Majesty recognised a number of people from across the University’s global community, from a number of disciplines and professions.

They include Professor Thomas Evans, Professor of Molecular Biology, who received a CBE for services to Healthcare during Covid-19 and Professor Donald McMillan, Professor of Surgical Science, who received an OBE for services to cancer research.

Professor Thomas Evans said: “I am delighted and surprised to receive notice of this honour in recognition of my work in healthcare during the COVID-19 pandemic. I am enormously grateful to many colleagues across Scotland who all worked so hard to ensure we could provide the best possible clinical and scientific advice during that period.”

Professor Donald McMillan said: “I am happy and surprised to receive this honour and I am grateful to my excellent collaborators and students over the years who have made my research productive.”

Jacqueline Baillie (Diploma in Housing Studies, 1994), Deputy Leader of the Scottish Labour Party. Dame Commander of the OBE for Political and Public Service
Peter Lawson (LLB 1979), Chair – Scottish Opera. CBE for services to the Arts in Scotland
Rhona Baillie (Diploma in Medicine 1996), Chief Executive, The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice, Glasgow. OBE for services to Palliative Care and to the Hospice Movement
Rev Dr George James Whyte (BSc 1976, BD 1980), Lately Principal Clerk, General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. OBE for services to Faith Communities
Dr Arlene Holmes-Henderson (EdD 2013), Associate Professor of Classics and Ancient History, Durham University. MBE for services to Education
Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli, Principal and Vice-Chancellor said: “Congratulations to all those connected to the University who are recipients of the King’s Birthday Honours for 2023. It is tremendous to once again see the University community recognised and it is indicative of the breadth of talent, hard work, and dedication that the University’s success is built upon.”
