University of Glasgow: The University Of Glasgow Announces The New Head Of The College Of Arts

The University of Glasgow has appointed Professor Jo Gill as Vice-Principal and Head of the College of Arts.

Professor Gill will join UofG from the University of Exeter and succeeds Professor Roibeard (Robby) Ó Maolalaigh, who will step down from the post in July.

She is joining the University’s College of Arts at an exciting time for Glasgow’s cultural and creative industries. The city has gained an international reputation as a creative innovation leader and cultural powerhouse.

Professor Gill is the University of Exeter’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean of the College of Humanities, having previously served as the University’s Associate Dean for Education and, prior to that, as Associate Dean for International & Development.

She is also a Professor of Twentieth-Century and American Literature in the Department of English, teaching and researching in modern and contemporary English and American literature with a particular interest in poetry, confessional and life-writing and in the literature and culture of cities and suburbs.

Professor Anton Muscatelli, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glasgow said: “It is with great pleasure that I welcome Professor Gill to Glasgow where I am certain she will bring strong leadership to the College of Arts. Professor Gill will bring her considerable expertise to this role as both a highly-regarded academic and a leader.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Robby for all his tireless work and achievements as Head of College these past seven years. Robby and his team have cemented the College’s global reputation and I am delighted he will continue his work at the University, promoting Gaelic languages, linguistics and culture.”

Professor Gill said: “I’m delighted to be joining the University of Glasgow as Vice–Principal and Head of the College of Arts. The Arts at Glasgow have a rich history, fantastic strengths across a wide range of subjects, and an enviable reputation for innovation and external engagement.

“I very much look forward to working with students and colleagues within the College and University, and with cultural and community partners, to ensure that the Arts at Glasgow will continue to flourish.”
