University of Greenwich: Gill Walton, OBE, receives honorary doctorate from the University of Greenwich
Chancellor Lord Boateng presented the doctorate in the chapel at the university’s Greenwich campus.
Gill has dedicated her career of over 30 years to midwifery and maternity services and advocating for women-centred care and has been the Chief Executive and General Secretary of the Royal College of Midwives since 2017.
She began her career training as a nurse at University College Hospital in London, before going on to midwifery training at the Princess Anne Hospital in Southampton.
Since then, Gill has led maternity services across the south of England and London, holding director of midwifery posts at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading; Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust; John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and most recently director of midwifery and maternity services at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust.
In June this year, Gill’s services to midwifery were recognised as part of the Queen’s Jubilee Honours when she was appointed a CBE.
