University of Greenwich Shines at Premier Exhibition for Film and Broadcast Technology
The International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) is an annual four-day long, media, entertainment and technology summit in Amsterdam that features exhibitors, panel discussions, keynote speaker presentations, masterclasses, demonstrations and an accelerator programme.
This year, Professor of Music and Sound Arts at the University of Greenwich, Professor Andrew Knight-Hill, took part in a panel discussion at the conference exploring research and pedagogical developments utilising cutting edge creative technologies.
Last year the university was awarded funding from UKRI for a Shared Hub for Immersive Future Technologies (SHIFT) to deliver new facilities to bring together artist-researchers across the disciplines of film, sound and performance to explore the potential in the latest immersive tools and technologies.
As part of this funding, an in-house virtual production film studio was established to capture content in front of real-time simulated backdrops via high-density LED screens, similar to that used to film the Star Wars show The Mandalorian, real-time motion tracking technologies, a virtual reality lab and high-density loudspeakers for the creation and editing of immersive soundscapes.
The university is also in partnership with Mo-Sys who are global leaders in creating original and highly sophisticated camera technology products for film and broadcast, producing high-quality augmented reality, virtual reality and virtual production. They were also on the panel.
Through the partnership, the university co-designs virtual production training programmes for industry professionals, partakes in research and knowledge exchange projects to identify new products in the sector and provide employment and work placement opportunities for students in the competitive film industry.
Professor Knight-Hill said: “It’s fantastic to showcase Greenwich leading research activities, in this cutting-edge field, at one of the world’s leading industry events and share how our partnership with MoSys is delivering real world change through the development of innovative curricula and professional development opportunities that really leverages the full potential of Virtual Production filming technologies.”
