University of Groningen: Academy building will turn orange for Orange the World
On 25 November, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the Academy building will light up orange. This is part of the international Orange the World campaign, the United Nations campaign that is committed to fighting violence against women and girls. The aim of the campaign is to ask everyone to openly support the fight against violence.
Prevention
The campaign’s theme in 2022 is prevention, and focuses on preventing violence. Especially men and boys who are not perpetrators themselves are asked to support the fight against violence. Women can also be active supporters, and by entering into conversation together the taboo surrounding violence can be broken.
The Academy building is not the only building that will turn orange on 25 November. Other locations throughout the Netherlands will also light up orange to increase the awareness of violence against women. In 2019 and 2021, the Academy building was lit up in orange for Orange the World as well.
About Orange the World
Around the world, one in three women face violence, and in the Netherlands, this percentage even rises to 45%. This is why 25 November has been declared the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. In over 90 countries around the world, 25 November marks the first of the 16 Days of Action against violence against women, which ends on 10 December, the International Human Rights Day. UN Women, the UN organization for women’s rights, is the worldwide coordinator of this campaign. Groningen is also participating, in collaboration with the Municipality, women’s rights organization Zonta, and women’s NGO Soroptimist International.
