University of Johannesburg: Junior UJ rugby players help Lions claim SA Rugby U20 title

A young squad of University of Johannesburg (UJ) helped the Lions rugby team win the South African Rugby Under20 Cup title on 30 October 2021. The Lions claimed the title with a 36-25 final score against the DHL Western Province, remained unbeaten in all 8 games played.

The UJ youngsters included Jurich Claasen, Boldwin Hansen, Indiphile Tyeda, Babalo Makana, Connor Van Buuren, Kgothatso Sono , Sihlalo Benge, Sisonke Vumazonke, Joe Jonas, Siyemukela Ndlovu as the captain of the team, and the team manager Motheo Rabodibe. Claasen was selected as the Man of the Match in the final and the top points scorer.

“The experience was unbelievable because I haven’t played a single rugby game in 2 years. It was good to be back. It is always a special achievement when a player is selected Man of the Match in a final. Throughout the tournament, I was confident in every moment on the field and I think that is why I am the most points scorer. I also worked hard on my individual skills, That why I consistently improved my game,” says Claasen.

The first year, Transport Management student joined UJ rugby team early this year and has played for UJ rugby team in the 2021 Varsity Cup tournament, where he was the 5th top points scorer with 64 points.

“It’s a great vibe between the players and management. The guys are solid and you can feel there’s good unity and bonding. A dream came true for me when I made my debut, I never thought that I will play Varsity Cup because it’s a big competition and very competitive,” adds Claasen.
