University of Johannesburg: On-form UJ men’s senior football team replicate league wins in 2021 FNB Varsity Football tournament

With three wins and a single draw out of four matches in the 2021 FNB Varsity Football tournament, the University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) senior men’s football team looks set to replicate its SAB League victory lap. UJ ended the tournament’s first of two bio-bubbles in first position being the only unbeaten of the eight teams.

The Orange Army, as affectionately known, has scored seven goals in its four matches. UJ kept two clean sheets against the University of Free State (Kovsies) and the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal (Impis) with 1-0 and 2-0 wins, respectively. In their opening match against defending champions, North West University, UJ won by 3-1, and drew 1-1 against Johannesburg rivals Wits University.

“We are pleased with our results in the first bubble of the tournament and we still have a lot of work to do. We will not rest on our laurels. We intend to finish in the number one spot, but our focus is on playing each game as if it is our last. We don’t worry about the games ahead, we worry about the next game. We have our own plans and targets and we’ll stick to them until the conclusion of the tournament,” says Mr Karabo Mogudi, UJ Men’s Senior Team Coach.

The teams will all play seven matches each in the two bio-bubbles. There are three remaining UJ matches scheduled for Wednesday, 22, against University of Pretoria (Tuks), Friday, 24, against Tshwane University of Technology and Sunday, 26 September 2021 against Vaal University of Technology.

The UJ men’s football team emerged winners of the 2021 SAB League Blue Stream. The team then participated in the promotion play-offs, but unfortunately did not make it past the play-offs. Their impressive wins in the 2021 FNB Varsity Football tournament, which is played behind closed doors due to COVID-19 in Tshwane at the University of Pretoria, have showcased their intention to challenge for the tournament title. The matches are broadcast live on SuperportTV.
