University of Johannesburg: UJ climbs globally in 2022 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings

In this year’s 2022 edition of the THE Impact Rankings released on Wednesday, 27 April 2022, UJ has improved its global ranking and has been ranked overall, in its third showing, at position 69 in the world, out of 1406 ranked institutions – 289 more than last year. The rankings means that UJ has climbed by 23 places from position 92 in the world in last year’s 2021 edition. UJ continues to take the leading position in South Africa whilst on the continental level, UJ is positioned at number two, behind Aswan University in Egypt.

This year’s edition was the fourth instalment of the THE Impact Rankings.

The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings are the only global performance tables that assess universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This set of 17 wide-ranging goals is central to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a universal call to protect the planet and its people.

For the 17 individual SDG impact rankings, UJ has been ranked in the top 100 universities in the world for 7 SDGs with a notable third place in the world for SDG 1: No Poverty (up from fourth position last year) and eighth place in the world for SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth (maintaining a top 10 global placement).

UJ is ranked #3 in the world for SDG 1: No Poverty and #8 in the world for SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.

The other 5 SDGs ranked in the global top 100 are:
SDG 4: Quality Education – 39th (down 15 places from 24th)

SDG 5: Gender Equality – 40th (up three places from 43rd)

SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities – 49th (up 11 places from 60th)

SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production – 68th (up 11 places from 79th)

SDG 2: Zero Hunger – 95th (up from 101-200)



For the remaining SDGs, UJ been ranked as follows:
SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals – 101-200 (up from 301-400)

SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy – 101-200 (down from 91st)

SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – 201-300 (maintained position)

SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation – 201-300 (down from 101-200)

SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions – 201-300 (down from 101-200)

SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being – 301-400 (up from 401-600)

SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure – 301-400 (maintained position)

SDG 13: Climate Action – 301-400 (maintained position)



UJ climbed in 7 SDGs, retaining it’s global position in 3 SDGs and dropped in only 5 SDGs, as indicated above.
