University of Johannesburg: UJ venerates Africa Day 2021

On May 25, 2021, the Transformation Division at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in partnership with Wits University Press, held a seminar on the occasion of the celebration of Africa Day. The meeting was held virtually under various themes to tackle the crises of our times.

The Africa Day celebrates the anniversary of the signing of the agreements of the OAU (Organisation of African Unity), on May 25, 1963. This was an opportunity for each country and societies to organise events in the aim to promote rapprochement between African people.

The seminar addressed the place of the cultural and creative economy as an essential element to the achievement of Africa we want (2063 Agenda of the African Union): culture and arts, heritage and culture, as a lever to build Africa.

Popular panelists and subject matter experts were in attendance. They discussed in particular:

Vaccine Fallacies, 3rd Wave and Health in Africa
Decolonising the human: Reflections from Africa on Difference and Oppression
An Africa we strive for, a student perspective on ‘Ubuntu’
The Black Lives Matter Series- presented by UJ Arts & Culture.
In addition, this was an opportunity for young Africans to exchange views and ideas, and to express their creative messages for “The Africa they want”.
