University of Johannesburg: World Netball appoints Bongiwe Msomi as Africa’s official Athlete Ambassador prior to 2023 Netball World Cup in SA
World Netball (WN) announced Bongiwe Msomi, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Netball Club Manager and Coach, as the official Athlete Ambassador for the African region running up to the 2023 Netball World Cup in Cape Town. WN made the announcement on Tuesday, 05 October 2021.
She is the South African women’s senior netball team, the SPAR Proteas, captain. Her appointment comes three months after the American agency, Roc Nation Sports, added her to its list of the international star-studded athletes managed through it.
“Not only is Bongi an incredible athlete who has brought joy to netball fans everywhere through her dynamic playing styles, off the court her commitment to raising the profile of the sport and using netball as a vehicle to empower and educate young women and girls is extraordinary,” says Liz Nicholl CBE, World Netball President.
Msomi will commence her ambassador duties immediately as she prepares to lead the Proteas in the 2023 Netball World Cup.
“Netball has completely changed my life and given me experiences I could never even have dreamt of as a young girl,” Msomi said in the statement.
It would not be the first time Msomi leads the Proteas, she previously captained the team on many occasions including in the 2019 Netball World Cup finishing in the fourth position.
The Proteas captain took the reins at UJ Netball in 2019. Her team recently finished in silver medal position in the September 2021 University of Sport South Africa (USSA) tournament at Camp Discovery.
