University of Johannesburg’s Dr. Cayle Lupton Takes Helm as Chairperson of ICCSA Banking Commission

The University of Johannesburg (UJ)’s Dr Cayle Lupton has been appointed as the chairperson of the Banking Commission of the International Chamber of Commerce South Africa (ICCSA).

Dr Lupton is a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Law and the Director of the Centre for Banking Law.

The Banking Commission is a national committee of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Paris. It consists of representatives (known as members) of the major banks and other institutions in South Africa. The responsibility of the Chair is to coordinate with members in providing feedback on ICC enquiries and draft opinions, which mostly deal with trade finance developments.

The Chair is also responsible for coordinating responses to national and international challenges facing the banking industry and the broader business environment. Such a response may take various forms, including as a report, opinion piece, workshop or seminar, and will be informed by the experience and expertise of the members. Ultimately, the Commission aims to contribute positively to the development of banking law, policy and practice in South Africa.

Dr. Lupton’s extensive expertise and dedication to the field of banking law make him an excellent fit for this prestigious role.

Speaking on his appointment, Dr Lupton said he is looking forward to making meaningful contributions in the development of trade practice and law.

“I am particularly excited about the journey that lies ahead. In this role I am presented with the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution in the development of trade practice and law, especially in relation to (South) Africa. It also provides the opportunity to promote South Africa at the international level, something which I constantly strive to do in my research. Furthermore, this position may serve my research well in that it will not be confined to literature but will also involve industry experience and practice,” he said.

An admitted attorney of the High Court, Dr Lupton is a certified anti-money laundering specialist (ACAMS, USA). His research interests include international banking law, specifically trade finance, financial crime and targeted sanctions.

His research has been recognised authoritatively on various international platforms, including by the Court of Appeal of Singapore and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Cayle believes that his prior experience in legal practice has informed his approach to research, which is to develop research of practical significance to the banking and finance community. In this way, his research stands to be of relevance in industry.
