University of Massachusetts Amherst: Education Scholars Trust, Maloy, and Hikmatullah Publish eBook Chapter on Integrating AI in Higher Education Teaching

College of Education professors Torrey Trust and Robert W. Maloy, together with doctoral student Nanak Hikmatullah, have published a chapter on AI and teacher education in “Exploring New Horizons: Generative Artificial Intelligence and Teacher Education,” a new open access eBook from the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education (AACE).

In the chapter, “Integrating AI in Teacher Education Using the Teacher Educator Technology Competencies,” authors Trust, Maloy and Hikmatullah identify ways that college and university teacher educators can expand the national Teacher Educator Technology Competencies (TETCs) to integrate GenAI tools into K-12 teaching and learning.

The chapter includes analysis of AI’s emerging roles in education, focusing on both its intended and unintended impacts – they write of how AI can generate usable information and share harmful misinformation, supercharge creativity and unfairly profit off copyrighted creative materials, increase worker productivity and exacerbate societal and digital inequities, reach learners in new ways and put traditionally marginalized students at greater risk of harm.

Viewing GenAI from a critical perspective, Trust, Maloy and Hikmatullah emphasize the importance of learning with and about AI. They offer specific steps for integrating AI into the 12 TETCs so current and future teachers can fully develop their AI literacy skills and knowledge.
