University of Massachusetts Amherst: UMass Amherst College of Engineering Celebrates 75 Years of Achievement, Innovation
The University of Massachusetts Amherst’s College of Engineering is celebrating its 75-year journey from a modest agricultural engineering curriculum to one of the top-ranking engineering programs in the country with an exhibit honoring the college’s history and a series of events and lectures throughout the fall.
The exhibit, “Engineering @75,” on display from September 1 through December 2022, features a curated collection of archival documents and photographs of events, research, everyday moments and the people who helped shape the college. The exhibit is located in the Science and Engineering Library, Lederle Graduate Research Center, 740 N. Pleasant St. A formal reception for the exhibit will be held on Oct. 26 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
“The grit and passion that formed our college’s foundation continues to drive our success as the number-one public college of engineering in New England and as a top engineering program nationally,” says Sanjay Raman, College of Engineering (COE) dean.
“The engineering program at UMass Amherst has continuously sparked innovation and pushed the boundaries of what’s seemingly possible since it was established on Sept. 1, 1947,” says Chancellor Kumble R. Subbaswamy. “The college has educated generations of engineers who have gone on to make important contributions to the innovation economy in Massachusetts and beyond.”
Additional celebratory events include the 2022 Tsuan Hua Feng Distinguished Lecture in Environmental Engineering, to be presented by University of California Berkeley civil and environmental engineering professor Kara Nelson on October 6 at 4 p.m. in the Amherst Room of the Campus Center; the annual Shirley and Ting-wei Tang Endowed Lecture “From Concept to Market: Bringing a Medical Device to Life” by Joseph Hidler ’94, owner and CEO of medical device company Aretech, LLC of Ashburn, Va., on October 13 at 4 p.m. in the Old Chapel; and an October 28 Homecoming reunion of mechanical and industrial engineering faculty and alumni beginning at 12:30 p.m. in the Gunness Student Center.
