University of Massachusetts Amherst’s ADVANCE Calls For New Leadership Team Members
UMass ADVANCE invites applications from faculty members in any school or college to fill multiple positions on the ADVANCE leadership team. Applications received by May 19 will receive full consideration.
The ADVANCE leadership team works collaboratively to build and draw on knowledge-driven research for faculty equity solutions. ADVANCE annual themes related to faculty collaboration and equity have included faculty peer mentoring, equity and inclusion during the COVID-19 pandemic, shared decision-making and equitable governance, and equitable recognition of research and collaboration practices. Future themes may include topics like equitable faculty evaluation practices.
UMass ADVANCE is currently directed by Laurel Smith-Doerr, professor of sociology. The director reports to the provost and the leadership team collaborates closely with the senior vice provost for equity and inclusion.
Depending on their interest and availability, all ADVANCE leadership team members will engage in activities such as: disseminating results (including through workshops/webinars), liaising with their college (dean, faculty fellows and colleagues) and collaborating on grant proposals. This is an exciting time as ADVANCE nears the successful completion of the five-year NSF-funded ADVANCE Institutional Transformation grant and plans are being made for the future of UMass ADVANCE.
Two kinds of UMass leaders are sought to join the ADVANCE team, with multiple members selected in each category.
Team leaders for practice are faculty members committed to working on practical solutions for faculty collaboration and equity built on ADVANCE research. ADVANCE team leaders for practice will also provide insights and input on interventions for faculty equity. Practice team members will receive a flat annual add comp of $3,000. The duration of commitment is to be determined with the director, but will be no less than a two-year term.
Team leaders for research are social science researchers who conduct studies of faculty equity on campus. ADVANCE team leaders for research will also conduct social science research on faculty equity issues on campus, with support from ADVANCE graduate research assistants. Research team members will receive a flat annual add comp/summer salary of $6,000 and will have access to additional funds to support research directly. The duration of commitment is to be determined with the director, but will be no less than a two-year term.
