University of Minnesota’s graduate programs shine and rise in latest U.S. News rankings

A number of University of Minnesota graduate schools and programs on the Twin Cities campus ranked among the nation’s best in the latest edition of the U.S. News Best Graduate Schools Rankings, the last of which were publicly released on Thursday morning. These included 72 programs and schools earning places among the top 30 in their field.

“We have long celebrated the extraordinary teaching and research taking place at the University of Minnesota, and we have continued to aim higher with guidance from MPact 2025, the University’s systemwide strategic plan. These well-earned placements of many of our graduate programs among the best in the country illustrate some of our University’s great strengths,” said University President Joan Gabel. “When we talk about how the U of M improves the lives of Minnesotans and people around the world, that work is rooted in education and discovery. Faculty and students in our graduate school programs are focused on those aspects of our mission every day, and their talents and commitment are reflected in these national recognitions.”

U.S. News ranks both schools and programs. Among the school rankings, the School of Nursing ranked 6th nationally, while the Humphrey School of Public Affairs (No.10), the College of Veterinary Medicine (No. 11), the School of Public Health (No. 12), and College of Education and Human Development (No. 25) all ranked among the top 25 in the country.

The Law School is ranked 16th nationally and in the top five among public law schools in the country.

The Medical School ranks No. 2 in Primary Care and No. 7 in Family Medicine nationally and among public schools. In Rural Health, the Medical School ranks No. 14 nationally and No. 7 among public schools. 

Programs and specialties across a wide array of U of M colleges and schools were ranked among the top 10 in their fields. These included Developmental Psychology (No. 1), Healthcare Management (No. 2), Primary Care (No. 2), Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) (No. 6), Information Systems (No. 6), Chemical Engineering (No. 6), Nonprofit Management (No. 7), Social Policy (No. 8), Special Education (No. 8), and Environmental Engineering (No. 9).

A growing list of accolades
These national recognitions for U of M graduate school programs add to many recognitions earned by the University over the past year. 

Earlier this year, U.S. News & World Report ranked the U of M Twin Cities campus as the No. 23 public university in the country for undergraduate education, its highest ranking in 12 years. Those same rankings celebrated the University’s Crookston campus as the No. 1 public Midwest regional college, the Duluth campus as  No. 6 among public Midwest regional universities and the U of M Morris as No. 8 public liberal arts college. The Academic Ranking of World Universities, also known as The Shanghai Ranking, listed the U of M Twin Cities No. 44 among universities worldwide and No. 10 among U.S. public universities. That organization also produces a Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, focusing on scholarship within 54 specific academic fields. The U of M was recognized among the top 25 globally in 12 of these categories. Most recently, the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research ranked the U of M Medical School No. 21 in the U.S. and No. 8 among public medical schools, a significant step forward in those rankings.
