University of Newcastle Science Subjects Ascend in Global Rankings

The rankings, which were released on Friday, measure an institution’s performance across 11 subject areas, with the results showing the University ranks in the top 200 universities in the world for five of the 11 subject areas.

Pro-Vice Chancellor Academic Excellence, Professor Jennifer Milam explained that with universities all around the world included in the rankings, the results demonstrated the University’s continued focus on excellence.

“Business and Economics, Clinical and Health, Computer Science, Education and Law all ranked in the top 200 universities in the world, reinforcing our position as a global leader for the region,” Professor Milam said.

The Universities STEM areas also continued to perform well in the rankings.

“Life Sciences and Physical Science subject areas have both consistently improved in the rankings in the past three years, with Life Sciences moving from 301-400 to 201-250 in the world and Physical Sciences advancing from 401-500 to 251-300 in three years,” Professor Milam said.

“Social Science also moved up a band to rank in the 201-250 band and Engineering maintained its position in the 201-250 band.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alex Zelinsky said the results are a testament to the university’s research and teaching.

“Our improvement across subject disciplines reflected the excellent work being carried out across our University. It shows our dedication to providing an outstanding experience for students and for conducting high quality research that solves global challenges,” Professor Zelinsky said.

The rankings, evaluate universities across the world according to 18 performance indicators that measure an institution across five areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook.

The University has shown continued improvements in rankings this year including improving almost 20 places to rank equal 173 in world in the QS World University Rankings and ranking top 30 in the world for Impact in the THE Impact Rankings.
