University of Portsmouth launches cutting-edge centre to combat global threats and challenges of cyber and economic crime

New Delhi: The University of Portsmouth, one of UK’s top 40 universities, has unveiled its groundbreaking Centre for Cyber and Economic Crime (CCEC), a pioneering endeavour aimed at addressing the growing global threats and challenges posed by cybercrime and economic offenses. With a focus on strengthening the digital landscape, this initiative brings together international experts to foster collaboration, develop innovative solutions, and protect nations from cyber and economic crimes.

In an era where the risk of cybercrime looms large, the establishment of the CCEC marks a crucial step in ensuring a secure and resilient digital environment. As technology advances and nations become increasingly interconnected, the need for effective countermeasures against cyber and economic crimes has never been more pressing.

The aim of CCEC is to bring together the expertise in cybercrime and economic crime from the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the wider University, including the School of Computing, the Department of Psychology, and the Faculty of Business and Law. The centre will serve as a hub for research and knowledge, leveraging the knowledge and experience of esteemed academics, industry professionals, and law enforcement agencies. By forging strategic partnerships and collaborations, the CCEC seeks to address the ever-evolving nature of cyber threats and financial crimes, offering innovative solutions to mitigate risks and protect individuals, businesses, and governments.

Speaking on the launch, Dr Vasileios Karagiannopoulos, Co-director of CCEC and Reader in Cybercrime and Cybersecurity, UoP, said, “The Centre is the fusion of our very successful and award-winning work in the fields of cybercrime/cybersecurity and economic crime and brings together colleagues from across the University working in these fields. This exciting initiative further establishes the University of Portsmouth at the vanguard of research, innovation and teaching in these fields globally.”

The establishment of the Centre for Cyber and Economic Crime highlights the University of Portsmouth’s commitment to tackling global challenges through innovation and collaboration.
