University of São Paulo: Collaboration between startups promotes innovation ecosystem in the Ribeirão Preto region

A mapping of startups that operate in the Metropolitan Region of Ribeirão Preto reveals that most of them have already collaborated with other companies or with universities and research centers. The information is from a study by the Supera Innovation and Technology Park released last December and which can be downloaded at this link . Based on the USP campus in Ribeirão Preto, the technology park is a partnership between USP, the Municipality of Ribeirão Preto and the Secretariat for Economic Development, Science, Technology and Innovation of the State of São Paulo, which aims to integrate universities , research institutes, startups and technology-based companies through the exchange of knowledge and technologies to generate business opportunities inside and outside the country.

According to the mapping, 72% of startups in the region have already established partnerships with other companies. The most mentioned type of connection between companies was the partnership to develop new products, services or processes. Partnerships with other types of organizations – such as universities, research centers and incubators – are less common, but are still present in 59% of startups. Many of these young companies have already established partnerships both with other companies and with organizations focused on teaching, research and technological development.

Observing the development stages of the companies, it was also possible to identify that the years 2018 and 2019 were the ones that most registered the creation of startups in the region.

Supera Parque is elected one of the best technology parks in Brazil
Supera was classified as one of the best technology parks in Brazil by SciBiz USP 2020 , an event that unites science and entrepreneurship and is considered the largest meeting of science and business in Latin America. It was held last November by the Faculty of Economics, Administration and Accounting (FEA) at USP.

The technology park was also considered one of the best ecosystem agents for startups in the country by the Ranking 100 Open Startups in the TOP 20 Ecosystem category. The ranking is the result of an annual process that measures the attractiveness of startups through the open innovation relationships registered and validated between companies and startups in the year.

What is startup?
According to the definition used by the Supera Parque team, a startup is a nascent company or in an early stage of development , whose work is based on research and the development of technological innovation. Startup is a temporary condition, since companies categorized in this way are looking for capital contributions and a scalable and reproducible business model that will allow them to grow quickly. According to information from the StartupBase database, Brazil today has more than 13,000 startups .
The objective of the mapping, which is in its second edition, is to get to know in detail the innovation ecosystem of Ribeirão Preto, which includes startups, universities, research centers, incubators and accelerators, business entities, forums, initiatives and civil society associations.

For the mapping, the selection process was divided into four stages: data collection; criteria for selecting actors; classification and analysis. Information from funding agencies, studies and reports, open bases and incubator portfolios were also taken into account.

The 230 startups and companies were classified according to the following criteria: having a website that is active or that is in a portfolio of accelerators or incubators for startups, having a technological base, scalable product and / or service, being located in at least one of the municipalities metropolitan region of Ribeirão Preto.
