University of São Paulo: New dean and new vice dean of USP take office on January 26

On January 26th (Wednesday), at 6:30 pm, professors Carlos Gilberto Carlotti Junior and Maria Arminda do Nascimento Arruda will take office as the new dean and new vice dean of the University of São Paulo (USP) for the four-year period 2022- 2026. The solemn session of the University Council will be broadcast on YouTube directly from Palácio dos Bandeirantes, seat of the government of São Paulo. Given health protocols, the in-person event will be restricted to Council members, USP directors and government authorities.

The slate formed by Carlotti and Maria Arminda was the most voted in the election held on November 25th, with 1,156 votes, and headed the list sent to Governor João Doria. The appointment was made by Doria on 8 December.

The new dean of USP, Carlos Gilberto Carlotti Junior, is a doctor at the Ribeirão Preto School of Medicine (FMRP), with an outstanding award in the clinical course. He is a neurosurgeon, graduated from the Hospital das Clínicas da FMRP (HCRP), and a specialist from the Brazilian Society of Neurosurgery. He holds a master’s degree and a doctorate from the FMRP and is a full professor at the Faculty’s Department of Surgery and Anatomy. He was clinical director of HCRP, director of FMRP and president of the Ribeirão Preto Medical Research Foundation. He is the Dean of Graduate Studies at USP, a position he has held since 2016.

Maria Arminda do Nascimento Arruda, the new vice-rector, has a degree in Social Sciences, a master’s, a doctorate and a full professor in Sociology, all from USP. She is a full professor of Sociology at the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences (FFLCH), where she was director between 2016 and 2020. She was a senior researcher at the Institute of Social and Political Studies of São Paulo, dean of Culture and University Extension at USP from 2010 to 2015 and representative of the Sociology Area at the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes) and the Human Sciences area at the institution’s Technical-Scientific Council. She is currently coordinator of the USP Women’s Office.

The new dean and vice dean of USP will have a term of office of four years. This will be the 29th rectoral term in the history of the University, founded in 1934. The first rector of USP was the professor of the Faculty of Law (FD), Reynaldo Porchat, and the first vice-rector, the professor of the Faculty of Medicine (FM) , Antonio de Almeida Prado.
