University Of São Paulo Prof’s Book Invites Children To The Transforming Universe Of Science

With the purpose of encouraging children’s scientific literacy and its transformative role, professor at the Faculty of Medicine at USP Bruno Gualano will launch the book Bel, the experimenter , at the Instituto da Criança e do Jovens, on August 24, at 11 am, by Moah! Publishing company.

On the occasion, a debate will be promoted on the (under)representation of gender and race in Science and the importance of greater interaction between the scientist and the community, with the participation of professor Adriana Alves (coordinator of the USP Women Office) and doctoral student from FMUSP Tamires Nunes, mediated by journalist Luiza Caires. The event will continue with the telling of the story of the book, made by children.

In this publication, the author introduces us to Bel, a girl who seeks to unravel the reason for things and, for that, experiments, successful or unsuccessful, with her faithful squire Galileo, her assistant kitten, attracting people’s attention. Could Bel be a bad witch, as the neighborhood children suspect? Or a junior researcher, full of doubts? How far will this girl’s curiosity take us?

The narrative is richly illustrated by the graphic artist and illustrator formed by the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism (FAU) of USP Catarina Bessel, In it, personalities such as Marie Curie, Mercedes Bustamante and Galileo Galilei appear, duly honored in the book for their achievements and importance in History of Science. The work has the support of FMUSP and has a preface by Natália Pasternak, who highlights the value of scientific thinking and showing Science as something charming to children and adults, and present in our daily lives.

For Gualano, one of the creators of the channel Ciência InForma and a columnist for Folha de S.Paulo , Science is an agent of transformation: “If every child, in every corner of this country, had the opportunity to discover the transforming power of scientific thinking , I am convinced that we would have a more critical, healthy, prosperous and equitable society“.

Through this book, the author wishes to contribute to the popularization of Science and the scientific literacy of children ‒ and its consequences in the social sphere ‒, and so he is seeking the support of organizations and companies interested in donating the book to children’s hospitals and the social projects aimed at children. In this first edition, more than 80% of print runs will be donated, with the support of the University of São Paulo and some partner companies, including hospitals such as the Instituto da Criança e do Jovens (ICr) and the Instituto de Controle do Câncer Infantil (ITACI). Anyone wishing to collaborate or propose partnerships can contact him directly at [email protected] or write to his publisher, heloisa@moaheditora,com.br.
