University of South Africa researcher recognised for outstanding psychology work

For Malherbe, it is important to learn from failure. He elaborates: “Setbacks can be valuable learning opportunities. Therefore, I encourage students to persevere through challenging times.”

Malherbe acknowledges that balancing personal life and studies can be challenging, especially when pursuing advanced degrees. “I was fortunate to have a supportive home environment during my academic journey,” he says.

His research interests are in psychology, particularly critical variants within psychology in community contexts. According to Malherbe, his research interests were influenced by his teachers and his work environment. He adds: “My teachers motivated me to pursue a career in education.”

Reiterating on the importance of supervision in academic research, Malherbe states that it assists students to navigate challenges and improve their work. He also explains that while supervision is not the same concept as mentorship, he was mentored by his supervisors during his academic journey.

Turning focus to the future of teaching and learning in higher education, Malherbe emphasises the importance of collective learning and learning with others. His academic insights into research, teaching and learning are valued by students and academics alike.
