University of Southern California: USC’s Santo Condorelli Wins Silver Medal With Team Italy In 4×100 Freestyle Relay At Tokyo Olympics
Former Trojan great Santo Condorelli contributed to Italy’s 4x100m free relay that won silver on Monday (July 26) in Tokyo, picking up USC’s first medal in the 2020 Games and the first Olympic medal of his career.
Condorelli, an NCAA champion and All-American, helped Italy to the fastest seed heading into the finals after swimming the second leg of the relay during prelims. The quartet’s preliminary time of 3:10.29 broke the Italian national record, which was lowered again in the finals to 3:10.11.
Including Condorelli’s silver finish, USC has produced more all-time medalists (306) than any other U.S. university. The Trojans’ silver medal count now stands at 92.
Also appearing in the men’s 4x100m free relay final was NCAA champion Vladimir Morozov (ROC), who helped the Russian Olympic Committee quartet to a seventh-place finish in 3:12.20.
Earlier in the day, Sweden’s Louise Hansson, who was sixth in prelims (56.97) and seventh in the semifinals (56.92), returned to the 100m butterfly finals to blast a personal best 56.22 and finish fifth overall.
NCAA champion Robert Glinta of Romania turned in a 53.20 100m backstroke to finish eighth and advance to the finals that will be held on July 26 at 6:59 PM PT.
