University of Texas at Austin: Breadth and Depth of UT Austin’s Excellence Reflected in Latest U.S. News Undergraduate Rankings
The University of Texas at Austin is holding its position as one of the best universities in the country, according to the most recent undergraduate rankings from U.S. News & World Report. UT Austin tied for No. 10 among national public universities and remains the top public university in Texas. Overall, the university placed No. 38 among national public and private universities.
U.S. News ranked several undergraduate disciplines this year, and UT Austin earned top-10 rankings in two of them: business (No. 7) and engineering (No. 9). The university remained No. 1 in accounting and petroleum engineering, and again ranked as the best university in Texas for veterans, ranking No. 18 nationally.
The School of Nursing also made significant gains this year and is now tied for No. 15 nationally, moving up from No. 23 last year, which was the first-ever undergraduate ranking from U.S. News.
“These rankings illustrate the strong academic reputation we have among our peers,” said UT President Jay Hartzell. “We have made significant strides through our strategic investments in faculty, research and the quality of the learning experience for our students. Combined with the incredible quality of today’s UT student body, these rankings represent points of pride and excellence.”
The U.S. News ranking is one of the most widely referenced measurements of undergraduate programs and is based on weighted factors such as student outcomes, faculty resources, expert opinions, financial resources, student excellence and alumni giving.
The university ranked in the top 25 in two specialty categories, placing No. 14 (up from No. 19) among the country’s “Most Innovative Schools” and No. 19 for undergraduate research (up from No. 25).
In addition to its No. 7 ranking nationally, the McCombs School of Business earned top-10 specialty rankings in 13 categories – the most top-10 specialty rankings of any business school in the country:

4 in Real Estate
4 in Marketing
5 in Management
6 in Insurance Risk
6 in Quantitative Analysis
7 in Business Analytics
8 in Supply Chain

The Cockrell School of Engineering ranked No. 9 nationally and earned top-10 specialty rankings in seven categories:

5 in Civil Engineering
7 in Environmental Engineering
8 in Computer Engineering
8 in Aerospace Engineering
8 in Chemical Engineering
10 in Mechanical Engineering
Computer Science, ranked this year at No. 11 nationally, earned top-10 specialty rankings in four categories:
7 in Software Engineering
9 in Theory
10 in Programming
10 in Computer Systems
Other Texas universities were featured in the national rankings. Among U.S. public and private universities, Rice University ranked No. 15 and Texas A&M University ranked No. 67.
