University of the Western Cape Hosts Legal Practitioners Forum to Discuss Current Legal Issues
The University of the Western Cape (UWC) hosted the Legal Practitioners Forum (LPF) biannual seminar on 19 September 2024.
The LPF is a collaborative platform where legal advisors and practitioners get together to discuss some of the legal challenges and developments currently affecting higher education institutions in South Africa and globally.
The session was opened by UWC Rector and Vice-Chancellor Professor Tyrone Pretorius, who warmly welcomed all guests and stated that they play a key role in ensuring that Higher Education institutions function smoothly, ethically, and in accordance with the law.
He said: “ At a time when corruption is rife in our country – when it’s become the norm – it’s no easy task to ensure that institutions in South Africa operate ethically and that they deal decisively with the scourge of corruption.”
He also took the opportunity to share his own experiences, working closely with UWC’s Department of Legal Services.
“At UWC, the contribution of our legal advisors has been indispensable. As Vice Chancellor, I can attest and confirm how much their guidance has helped steer our university through some very complex matters. Whether navigating the ever-changing legal landscape, handling employment-related issues or ensuring compliance with regulatory frameworks, our legal services team provides the backbone of our administrative functions.”
Chairperson of the Legal Practitioners Forum (LPF), Shervaan Rajie said: “By bringing together the collective voices of the legal practitioners in the Higher Education Sector who live and experience the challenges of Universities on the ground, the Legal Practitioners Forum can influence policy-making and advocate for changes that benefit the entire sector.”
The LPF engaged on topical and controversial topics ranging from eviction of students from residences in a humane and sensible manner, to the use of artificial intelligence in Higher Education and how this would impact academic integrity.
Members of the LPF congratulated UWC for hosting a successful and the best attended forum.
