The nomination will connect Lucas, a Master’s candidate in Sport for Development in the Department of Sport, Recreation and Exercise Science, with other young “change makers” on the continent, and this may be just what she needs2 to take her career to the next level.

“Being a member of the BYM network will grant me access to connect with other unique and excellent changemakers to collaborate with in future, which is very exciting. I hope this achievement will inspire the youth I lead to always reach for the sky,” Lucas commented. “This selection is validation that I am on the journey meant for me, that following my passions will lead me to the successes I seek in this life.”

Lucas spent ten years as a High-Performance Artistic Gymnast, representing the Western Cape on numerous occasions, and that ignited her passion for sport in general.

She completed her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sport, Recreation and Exercise Science on campus in 2017 and a Postgraduate Diploma in Sport for Development and Peace a year later, together with a certificate in Massage for Sport and Fitness. She has been a top achiever academically,

She is a member of the Foundation for Sport for Development and Peace NGO as a youth leader, and formed the Youth Network for Sport for Development and Peace, which focuses on youth development using sport as a vehicle, adopting and advocating for the values of Olympism to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

In 2020 she launched her own business, Raecovery, which focuses on injury prevention, muscle recovery and the training and development of students within the sports science industry. The company offers services for the Protea rope-skipping team, among its clients.

Lucas said she is looking forward to collaborating with her fellow Brightest Young Minds to bring forth some new youth development initiatives.
