University of Tokyo: 2021 Autumn Semester Matriculation Ceremony held

The University of Tokyo 2021 Autumn Semester Matriculation Ceremony was held at Yasuda Auditorium on Friday, October 1, 2021.

The ceremony was held only with new students who pre-registered and have tested negative for the novel coronavirus on the day, to minimize risk of infection of the novel coronavirus. Moreover, students newly enrolled in the 2020 autumn semester were also allowed to attend the ceremony.

The ceremony began at 11:00 a.m. with the University of Tokyo Orchestra’s performance (recorded sound). President Fujii Teruo, the executive vice presidents, deans of the Graduate Schools and Faculties then ascended to the stage in their academic gowns.

President Fujii addressed to new students, followed by an address from Someya Takao, dean of the Graduate School of Engineering. Two new students (Ms. Lauren Suzanne Power, a Doctoral student from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and Ms. LEE Jungwoo from the College of Arts and Sciences) then took an oath on behalf of the entire incoming class, after which the ceremony was concluded.

A livestream of the ceremony was provided, and watched by many new students and their families who were unable to attend the ceremony, as well as the general public.
