University of Tokyo: Launch of the Energy Transition Initiative – Center for Global Commons

ETI-CGC (Energy Transition Initiative – Center for Global Commons), a platform of industry-academia collaboration was launched on November 5, 2021 with an aim to develop Japan’s pathways to achieve decarbonization (net zero greenhouse gas emissions) by mid-century.

The climate crisis requires us to address many issues. Some of the key issues include: how to keep the global temperature rise below 1.5 degrees Celsius by reducing greenhouse gas emissions; collaboration between the Global North and South; and realizing transformations while safeguarding biodiversity and other aspects of our ecosystem. ETI-CGC will allow us to tackle many of these very significant issues. The University of Tokyo is working closely with Japan’s business leaders to chart our country’s pathway to net zero and provide the world with new solutions for the Global Commons.

Through the ETI-CGC, the University of Tokyo will contribute from an academic standpoint to Japan’s economic and social system transition required for achieving decarbonization.
