University of Waterloo Delegation Visits Tokyo Tech

On February 20, President Vivek Goel of the University of Waterloo (Canada), which has an Institutional-Level Agreement with Tokyo Tech, led a delegation to Ookayama Campus.
President Goel’s visit followed a courtesy call by Associate Vice President Ian Rowlands in October 2023.

The delegation met with President Kazuya Masu, Executive Vice President for Institute Strategy and Provost Isao Satoh, Vice President for International Affairs Nobuhiro Hayashi, Dean of the School of Science Kotaro Yamada, Dean of the School of Engineering Kotaro Inoue, Dean of the School of Life Science and Technology Susumu Kajiwara, and Dean of the School of Environment and Society Jun-ichi Takada for fruitful discussions on further international cooperation.

The University of Waterloo was founded in 1957 and boasts the largest faculty of engineering in Canada. It shares noteworthy parallels with Tokyo Tech, as both institutions have their origins in vocational education and emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to education and research geared toward tackling global challenges through convergence science.

The University of Waterloo can offer valuable insights for Tokyo Tech due to its robust internship programs with diverse industry partners, enriching the discussion and the potential for future collaboration.

After the meeting, the visitors toured two laboratories: Associate Professor Kosuke Fujishima’s laboratory at the Earth-Life Science Institute (ELSI) and Associate Professor Tetsuo Kodera and Specially Appointed Associate Professor Jun Yoneda’s laboratory (Quantum Computing Research & Education field) at the Academy for Super Smart Society, where they exchanged views and opinions.
