University of Wollongong hosts the visit of ANZ-India Business Chamber delegation
University of Wollongong (UOW) Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Patricia M. Davidson today (19 May 2023) welcomed key members from the ANZ- India Business Chamber to the University to discuss strong ties between both countries.
The meeting was focused on facilitating the exchange of innovative ideas and strategies for advancing business development within the education sector across Australia, New Zealand, India, and Singapore.
The meeting follows the University receiving approval to establish its teaching base in Gujarat International Financial Tec-City (GIFT City). Once commenced later this year, the University aims to offer a Graduate Certificate in Computing and a Master of Computing in the Finance domain, and then add a Master of Applied Finance and Master of Financial Technology (FinTech) in 2024. This will be followed by Bachelors of Business and Computing Science in 2025.
UOW also plans to establish a Global Capital Markets Research Centre in its GIFT City location focussed on training PhD students and delivery of research with a focus on Indian capital markets. The University has commenced work with the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) and has in-principle support from the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and Singapore Exchange (SGX).
“We are delighted to welcome the members of the ANZ-India Business Chamber to the University,” Professor Davidson said.
“UOW has longstanding partnerships in India which stretch across higher education, government, industry and research organisations. It has a strong history of delivering quality mobility programs, and increasing participation in mobility programs between both countries is a strategic goal for the University.
“Over 170 UOW students have participated in short-term mobility programs to India through the New Colombo Plan Mobility Funding Program since the program’s inception in 2014. Two recent short-term New Colombo Plan programs in India were Michael Adams’ and Nicholas Gill’s Western Ghats and Goa Geography study tours. These took place in early February 2023 for two weeks and involved 34 students.
“The University looks forward to further strengthening our ties and creating opportunities in the region through research and teaching collaborations.”
The University has close to 30 active agreements with Indian universities, with major research collaborations include software development, railway engineering, mining technologies, innovative materials, environmental sustainability, human resources, management, logistics, statistics, surveying, infrastructure management, modelling and research, business entrepreneurship and the practice of corporate social responsibility.
In 2023 Indian students make up UOW’s largest international cohort with more than half of these students studying at UOW in Dubai. Indian citizens represent nearly a quarter of the University’s total international student enrolment, with 75 per cent of our Indian students studying in the disciplines of Business or Engineering and Information Sciences. In total, there are over 2,500 Indian students enrolled at UOW.
