UPMC Hamot President Step Up To Regional President
David Gibbons, president of UPMC Hamot since 2017, senior vice president of UPMC’s Health Services Division, and market president for UPMC’s Northwest Pa. and North Central Pa. regions, has been promoted to regional president in addition to senior vice president of the Health Services Division. Gibbons will have oversight of three of UPMC’s five geographical regions: Northwest Pa. and New York, North Central Pa., and now also Central Pa.
A national search will be conducted to replace Gibbons as UPMC Hamot’s next president who will also serve as president of the Northwest Pa. and New York region. During this time, Gibbons will continue to serve in his current roles, and Brian Durniok, president of UPMC Chautauqua and UPMC Northwest, will provide on-site support at UPMC Hamot to help ensure a smooth and seamless transition.
In his new UPMC role, Gibbons will work with the clinical and operational leaders in these regions, which include 18 hospitals, with continued focus on enhancing clinical care and outcomes, quality and safety, employee and patient experiences, and access to care.
“David has served as president of UPMC Hamot since 2017 and is highly respected across UPMC,” said Joel Yuhas, president of the Health Services Division. “He has led an unprecedented period of sustained excellence, growth, and expansion, especially with respect to the hospital’s service excellence and clinical capabilities, which have led to UPMC Hamot’s strong position as the employer and provider of choice.”
UPMC Hamot was the first hospital in its region to earn the Magnet® designation for high-quality patient care, nursing excellence, and innovation in professional nursing practice. UPMC Hamot is also the only Level II trauma center in its region and performed the first kidney transplant in the region.
Under Gibbons’ leadership in 2020, UPMC Hamot completed the largest capital construction project in its history, a $111 million, seven-story patient care tower with 64 state-of-the-art intensive care beds.
“I’ve enjoyed every minute of the past seven years serving as president of UPMC Hamot,” Gibbons said. “We’ve accomplished so much, together, including a significant expansion of our specialty care, services and programs, the graduation of the first class of the UPMC Jameson School of Nursing at UPMC Hamot, and our continued investment in areas like infrastructure, recruitment, and technology.”
Gibbons will also serve as a member of the UPMC Hamot board, positioning him to stay close to the hospital and staff.
Gibbons joined the UPMC Hamot leadership team in 2012 as the executive vice president and chief operating officer. In addition to his role at UPMC Hamot, he also served as president of UPMC Northwest in Venango County, a role he previously held between 2009 until 2012.
Prior to joining UPMC, Gibbons was the chief operating officer at Kennedy Health System in Voorhees, N.J. He also served as the director of managed care for the Visiting Nurses Association of Greater Philadelphia; the regional director of operations, marketing and finance for Oncology Services Inc.; and director of oncology programs for U.S. Healthcare in Blue Bell, Pa.
Gibbons earned an associate degree in nursing and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Clarion University of Pennsylvania and a master’s degree in health administration from Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia.
