UPMC: New Kensington Community Celebrates the Opening of State-of-the-Art UPMC Family Health Center

Foundation, hospital and community leaders, including Senator James R. Brewster, Representative Carrie DelRosso and Mayor Thomas Guzzo, gathered earlier today to celebrate the newly opened UPMC St. Margaret New Kensington Family Health Center with a ribbon-cutting and facility tours.

For more than 20 years, the family health center has served the community with comprehensive and compassionate medical and behavioral health care for patients of all ages at its previous location. The new facility, made possible in large part by the St. Margaret Foundation and its donors and UPMC St. Margaret, will increase access to primary health care for vulnerable populations and will provide a safe and healing environment where patients have a positive and engaging experience.

“The St. Margaret Foundation’s partners in philanthropy—foundations, corporations, elected officials and individual donors—filled in the gaps with hope and promise to bring the dream of a new community health center to life. We’re grateful for this collaboration and to give this beautiful facility to the people of New Kensington,” said Mary Lee Gannon, president, St. Margaret Foundation.

The largest donations were received from the Richard King Mellon Foundation and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Staunton Farm Foundation generously funded the Sunshine Space, which will be used for trainings, health education events and community meetings.

As part of the highly recognized UPMC St. Margaret Family Medicine Residency Program, the UPMC St. Margaret New Kensington Family Health Center fosters an academic model of care and prepares the next generation of family medicine doctors. Available health care services include primary care, obstetrics, pediatrics, opioid use disorder intervention, psychiatry, social work and behavioral health.

“We are excited to move into this beautiful new family health center and renew our commitment to treating every person with dignity and respect, and to marshal the resources of experienced physician educators, behavioral health specialists, pharmacy expertise and compassionate nursing and medical staff to provide holistic, patient-centered care,” said Jonathan Han, M.D., program director, UPMC St. Margaret Family Medicine Residency Program.

The family health center, which started seeing patients in early May, is located at 1072 Fifth Ave., New Kensington, Pa., 15068. The facility is open Monday through Friday and will be led by Winfred Frazier, M.D., medical director, UPMC St. Margaret New Kensington Family Health Center.

“Six years ago, this was just an idea, but with the tireless work of the St. Margaret Foundation and its donors, as well as elected officials and community leaders all coming together, it is now a reality for our patients,” said Dave Patton, president, UPMC St. Margaret.

The $5.4 million facility is 8,000 square-feet and provides efficient access for all patients. It has a spacious and inviting family lounge and 12 private exam rooms. An outdoor courtyard welcomes patients and visitors with fresh greenery and seating.

“The New Kensington community is important to UPMC and our commitment to bringing world-class health care to where our patients live can be seen with the opening of this state-of-the-art facility,” said Leslie C. Davis, executive vice president, UPMC, and president, UPMC Health Services Division. “The services we’re providing here are designed to meet the health needs of this community. UPMC will continue reinvesting across our regions to advance clinical and service excellence.”
