Ural federal university: Cyclotron Particles Acceleration Center Begins Production of Radiopharmaceuticals

The capacity of the Cyclotron Center of Nuclear Medicine of the Ural Federal University will help increase the production of radiopharmaceuticals for expanding the PET/CT diagnostics program in the Sverdlovsk Region. Rector of UrFU Viсtor Koksharov spoke about its capabilities in a comprehensive project for the development of nuclear medicine in the region.

“By the end of 2021, the University Cyclotron Center for Nuclear Medicine will begin industrial production of radiopharmaceuticals, primarily 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose, which is used in the vast majority of PET studies and allows detecting malignant tumors of many organs,” said Viсtor Koksharov.

The capabilities of the Ural Federal University cyclotron center will allow the production of other in-demand radiopharmaceuticals for the diagnosis of other diseases, including, for example, Parkinson’s disease, cardiovascular pathologies and others.

“Today, out of 29 radiopharmaceuticals registered and approved for use in Russia in the Sverdlovsk region 15 are used to some extent. The start of the cyclotron center of nuclear medicine can change the situation,” added Rector Koksharov.
