Ural Federal University Launches “World History in Global and Regional Dimensions”

The Department of Modern and Contemporary History together with the Department of Ancient and Medieval History of the UrFU Ural Institute of Humanities has launched a new Master’s program “World History in Global and Regional Dimensions”. The program is aimed at training specialists capable of effective international professional activity in the sphere of intercultural interaction between the West and the East. It focuses on world history in the context of intercultural interaction between different peoples and civilizations. The program pays special attention to the practice of historical translation of texts from the original language into Russian and the actualization of the historical role of Russia.

“I would like to draw attention to the innovative nature of the program. The search for points of contact between different cultures and civilizations in the global space is more relevant than ever. The basis of scientific research is the “new world history”, which combines the traditional world history and the civilizational approach developed in Russian historiography over the past 30 years. The high academicism of the program, which we try to maintain, is the level of modern current world historiography, and in this sense we are at the forefront,” said Veronika Vysokova, the academic head of the program, professor of the Department of Modern and Contemporary History.

Historical translation requires knowledge not only of the foreign language, but also of the historical context, the peculiarities of the writing of the period, the terminology, the aesthetics of the text, and so on. Professionals with such skills are in demand on the market, they actively participate in the preparation of scientific researches, project activities in the field of Culture, Linguistics, International Relations, etc.
