Ural Federal University: Sports Cluster Appears at University

Taking into consideration the experience of the Winter Universiade organization in Krasnoyarsk and the need to implement the concept of heritage after the World University Games that will take place in Ekaterinburg next year, Oleg Matytsin, the Head of the Ministry of Sports of Russia offered to organize experimental sites for the creation of university sports centers at two federal universities – the Siberian Federal University and Ural Federal University.

This, according to the official, will involve young people in sports, reports the official website of the Kremlin.

“The university has long affirmed its status as a driver of development in a large macro-region. Attracting young people to a healthy lifestyle is the third mission of our university, along with education, scientific research, and the formation of public spaces. The University Sports Center will allow us to accumulate our experience both in holding major sports events and in educational and methodological support of physical education classes,” says Victor Koksharov, Rector of UrFU.

The Minister also noted that preparations for the 2023 Summer World University Games in Ekaterinburg are ongoing.

“Currently, measures are being taken to build, reconstruct and prepare 40 infrastructure facilities, including seven new sports complexes. Work is underway on the construction of five dormitories of the Universiade Village, which will be handed over to Ural Federal University. After the competition, the renovated infrastructure will undoubtedly become an important part of the legacy,” said Matytsin.
